Unit Notes
ALL PPW due WEDNESDAY at NOON MST the week before start
- Biweekly orientation only
- Permanent address must be at least 25 miles from the facility location.
- # Beds: 24 beds – all private
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: Days: 1:4–5 (goal of 1:4). Nights: 1:5–6 (goal of 1:5).
- Required Certifications: BLS, RQI (completed during orientation). RQI is the equivalent of BLS, but all nurses are required to complete it regardless. It takes about 15 minutes.
- Common Diagnoses/Types of Patients: Typical medical patients. Not looking for an oncology nurse. Looking for medical nurses. COPD, psych, detox, oncologic emergencies (neutropenic fevers), blood transfusions, failure to thrive, falls, and everything you would see on a medical unit.
- Experience or "Must-Have" Skills: Minimum 1 year of experience. No previous travel experience required. Epic experience is not required.
- Are RNs Required to Titrate Drips? Yes.
- Common Titratable and/or Set-Rate Drips: Heparin, fentanyl. Travelers are not required to administer chemotherapy.
- Tele/Monitor Techs: Remote telemetry technicians monitor the telemetry boxes on the floor. RNs are not required to monitor telemetry.
- Charge Nurse/House Supervisor: Charge nurses are available on both shifts. They generally do not take patient assignments. Occasionally on nights, they may take a chemotherapy patient. ARR (Rapid Response Nurse) is available 24/7.
- Nurse Aides/Ratios: CNAs – Days: 1:6–10. Nights: 1:8–12.
- RT Equipment: CPAP, BiPAP maintenance, high-flow oxygen. Respiratory Therapy provides primary management and is available 24/7.
- Shifts & Scheduling: Shifts begin at 6:45 AM and 6:45 PM. Self-scheduling and block scheduling are allowed. The manager prefers someone who can work Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights but is willing to be flexible.
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (4 weekend shifts every 4-week schedule). Night shift weekends are Friday and Saturday. If the traveler works Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday consistently, the weekend requirement is waived.
- Holiday Requirement: No specific holiday requirements, but travelers may be scheduled if needed. Flexible travelers are preferred.
- Call/Standby Requirement: On-call shifts may be required during low census. Travelers can be called in at any time while on call. On-call pay is lower than the regular rate. Call assignments follow the schedule unless otherwise requested.
- Floating Requirements: Float to inpatient units, including telemetry, surgical/ortho/neuro, and medical units. Travelers are expected to care for medical patients only, not specialty patients. Floating frequency varies and follows the same rotation as permanent staff.
- Scrub Color/Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs. Professional appearance required.
- Unit/Department-Specific Orientation: 3 days with a preceptor.
- Additional Notes: Greatest need is for night shift coverage during the holiday season.
Orientation
- 3 orientation shifts unless additional orientation is requested. The manager is happy to discuss extending orientation if needed.
Scheduling
Agency staff may enter their schedules into Kronos and will have access to do so. Once everyone submits their schedules, the manager balances the schedule while trying to minimize changes. The manager also tries to schedule night shifts consecutively whenever possible.
Weekends
Every other weekend (4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule). Weekend nights are Friday and Saturday.
Holidays
Scheduling depends on the needs of the unit. Agency staff are not usually scheduled on holidays, but it has occurred when staffing needs require it.
